INTRODUCTION
The Vela Ranch's licensed whitetail scientific breeding operation formally began in the Spring of 2000. However, our lifelong interaction, study, and love for whitetail had long existed and enabled us to easily formulate our principle goal -- that of developing a superior bloodline which would produce outstanding, healthy, heavy-antlered, typical bucks.

Does from the Vela Ranch have bloodlines from respected Texas whitetail breeders including Gary Machen, 777 Ranch, and Moczygemba (Paco). Gamba, our breeder buck, is from the Paco and Buddy Jordan bloodline, out of Gery Moczygemba (Paco) pens.


IMPROVING THE GENE POOL
In hopes of augmenting the genetic pool, artificial insemination with 200+ Boone & Crockett bucks began in 2003. In 2004, straws from Cowboy (241 5/8 B&C), Bambi 727 (197+ B&C), and Texas Sam (215 B&C) were used to artificially inseminate more than forty does. In 2005, artificial insemination was carried out with semen from Bullwinkle (222 B&C at 4 years) and Soaring Eagle (2 year old, 280+). In 2006, we used Bullwinkle, Gladiator (3 year old, 260 B&C), and BB Peanut (TDA 2004 "Best in Show"). This year (2007), we will utilize semen from Gladiator, King Solomon (2 year old, 230 est. B&C), and BB Peanut.

Most of the Vela Ranch doe fawns are bottle-fed. This practice, while time-consuming, tedious (3-4 times/day), and expensive, is rewarding. Does are gentle, easy to handle, and can be safely bred. With gentler deer, we are able to adhere to strict, accurate record-keeping.

El Rey (3 yo), 6 x 7 main-frame, typical buck with expected 180 B&C. *SOLD* His sire was Bud Man (222+ as 3 yo).









FOR SALE
This year (2007) we have mature open does for sale starting at $3500, with competitive pricing based on age, genetics, and breeding history. One, two, and three year old bucks and yearling does will be available for sale, priced competitively. A limited number of Bandido and Dallas and artificially inseminated buck and doe fawns are also available. These top quality South Texas whitetail can be used to improve your deer bloodlines or to begin/add to a scientific breeding operation.
